If you want to apply to join the GTCNI Register of Teachers you can download an application form below. It should be submitted along with your registration fee and any supporting documentation required.
You should make sure you apply well in advance of taking up any teaching post because you must be registered when you start in your new job and at peak times processing your application form may take considerably longer than normal.
NI Graduates
There are four Higher Education Institutions in Northern Ireland that provide Initial Teacher Education (ITE) programmes which are accredited by GTCNI:
- Queens University Belfast;
- Ulster University;
- St Mary’s University College; and
- Stranmillis University College.
If you are studying an ITE programme at one of these accredited providers our Registration Team should have already been out to meet you to distribute and collect applications forms. If you have not received an application yet you can download, complete and submit the Application Form. This application process is for NI Graduates only.
UK Graduate
If you have been awarded a recognised teaching qualification within the UK (England, Scotland or Wales) you will need to complete the Application form for UK Graduates. Please note that GTCNI retain the right to determine if the teaching qualification meets the criteria required for professional recognition in Northern Ireland.
Teachers from the EU
Teachers who are recognised as a qualified teacher by a member state of the EU/EEA or Switzerland and are seeking recognition under EU Directive 2005/36/EC must use the appropriate Application Form.
Rest of the World Graduates
All teachers who have been educated and trained outside the UK, EU, EEA or Switzerland should use the Rest of World (RoW) Application form. Please note that you will be required to demonstrate that your teaching qualification meets both the academic and practice criteria equivalent to Initial Teacher Education programmes in Northern Ireland.
DE Recognition
If you have previously been awarded ‘eligibility to teach’ by the Department of Education in Northern Ireland, but for some reason have not registered with the Council you can also download, complete and submit the appropriate Application Form.
